Summer Exhibition on Long Island

Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition’s national juried show of art crafted from cast-off, discarded, and re-purposed materials – is a celebration of ingenuity and imagination.

Exhibition space is located at 481 Van Brunt, Door 7, Van Brunt Street, Red Hook, Brooklyn, 11231, in the pre-Civil War warehouse overlooking the Statue of Liberty.

The gallery is open weekends only, 1-6PM, during the scheduled art shows.

The City Reliquary’s sculpture exhibition — in conjunction with the museum’s current exhibit, NYC Trash!: Past, Present, & Future — presents the work of ten local trash artists whose works will be on display in the Reliquary’s backyard garden.

The spirit of NYC Trash! reinforces the notion that trash can and should be reused. The sculptures on display are site-specific and fabricated from refuse and found objects.

Through the use of trash as art, NYC Trash!: Past, Present, & Future Sculpture Garden highlights the need for continued conversation about our waste problem — especially in a metropolis like New York City — and allows visitors to look at trash as more than ephemera.

Artists include Bernard Klevickas (sculptures made from salvaged bicycle parts); Niki Lederer (colorful repurposed plastic turned into hanging pieces); Barbara Lubliner (Plastic Bottle Succulent Garden); Jeffrey Allen Price (making site-specific sculptures out of the by-products of art and life); Claudia Sbrissa (artwork inspired by landscapes); Tyrome Tripoli (sculpture representative of life journey and discovery); and Debbie Ullman (an urban intervention aimed at stimulating community engagement and interaction). For the opening, artist Mierle Laderman Ukeles’ 20 cubic-yard garbage truck faced with hand-tempered mirror titled The Social Mirror garbage truck will be parked outside the museum to allow the public to get up close and personal with New York’s trash removal devices.

Case Studies is a unique group exhibition in which artists have been invited to intervene with re-purposed, salvaged museum display cases. The majority of these cases were donated to Gallery Aferro by the George Washington Mt. Vernon Estate Museum, as well as from the New York Historical Society and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Large, elegant, dark wood displays, previously used for a traveling exhibition of objects from George Washington’s life, as well as plexiglass vitrines and pedestals, will be transformed by artists for a contemporary vision. Artists from across the East Coast will be participating, creating a diverse and unique experience for the viewers. This exhibition will create a dialogue between museum culture, gallery experimentation, and the artist’s voice.

I will be speaking about my work as part of the “Residency Solutions Night 2: Wasted”

This is part of a curated evening led by Impact Residency Artist Carolyn Monastra around the central theme Wasted. Artists whose work focuses on waste, will give presentations with a follow-up discussion about what we all can do about waste. The evening will include a musical performance by TWNY Music Guild plus a brief introduction to The Climate Reality Project by Simone Rothman.

This year NYC Parks is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its Art in the Parks program. Since its creation in 1967, Art in the Parks has featured over 2,000 works of art. On Saturday, October 21, NYC Parks is transforming Central Park into a stage, museum, and art studio for a free day of public art to celebrate this milestone. Art lovers, families, and park-goers will be delighted by free art exhibits, performances, and hands-on art workshops in Central Park’s beautiful East Pinetum field.
